ステートメント Statement

As someone who was born in a time when it seems that stories have lost their power, and all the things around me, which continuously increase in number due to self-reproduction, have lost their origins, becoming a garbage heap of simulacra, I gather the images that I see and challenge their superficiality in my paintings. My work avoids the mere exchange of meaning with images, for I am bored in this consumer society.

Stories, ideology that explains origins or world views or human psychology to people in the past are, in contemporary society, scrutinized and, thereby disintegrated, by relativism rendering them only useful on an individual level. Hence, stories, writ large, can no longer be integrated into a larger, societal framework because their idealization is now viewed as meaningless by means of self-centered individualism. So I choose to paint my own Romantic myths to comfort myself. My colors reflect the essence of the collapsing community and a desperate longing for a vivid existence, which I never feel. The colors and places that I depict also dare to reflect the collective subconscious of a contemporary utopian image. For example, the image of tropical jungle and indoor plants, or the beautiful cobalt blue sea are the psychological attachment of people at leisure in the unstable Post-Fordist condition. This is especially true on the Internet where people who have lost the utopian image told by the past story, have instead become accustomed to the digital visual culture and stepped into the age of augmented reality. The struggle and drive for me is to recreate on the unified surface of the painting this paradox between the loss of collective stories and the fact that my paintings are implicated in and a reflection of the very simulacra they propose to critique.

Thus, I look for the painting which lies on the border of reality and illusion. By using the Magical Realistic and Surrealistic power of imagination to transform the images which people are immensely exposed to everyday, and the images that are found in urban city life, I create my own meta-narrative, seeking a backdoor emergency exit from our time.
